A creatinine test is one of the most commonly used blood tests for assessing kidney function.

Creatinine is a waste product produced mainly through normal muscle metabolism. Healthy kidneys continuously filter creatinine from the blood and remove it through urine.

When kidney filtration decreases, creatinine can accumulate in the bloodstream.

However, a high creatinine level does not automatically mean permanent kidney disease. Creatinine can change for several reasons, including dehydration, acute kidney injury, certain medicines, high muscle mass, intense physical activity and other factors.

For this reason, doctors interpret creatinine together with eGFR, urine findings, previous test results, symptoms and the overall clinical picture.

At Prabhakar Bhurke Clinic, Dr. Sandip Prabhakar Bhurke, super specialist nephrologist and transplant physician, provides individualized evaluation for abnormal creatinine and kidney-function
